Happy 98th Birthday, Papa Lou!

Ok, even though i have a few months of updates (i want to update them for my own keepsake even though i'm way behind!) i had to post today to write about my papa lou! Today is his 98th birthday. Can you imagine? 98 years? He is imobile now, and they have an aide during the day (they go through many aides, they are not very dependable or stable), but my grandma (who recently celebrated her birthday) is insistent, despite all of our wishes, that he live at home until his time is over, and i know he appreciates being home.

Papa had a mini stroke in July- so he now cannot eat or drink any food- he is on a feeding tube- but he still sat at the thanksgiving table with us before we ate and gave us a silly prayer- he is always joking around. (here's the video- scroll to almost the end to hear his prayer)

He LOVES to see his great grandchildren- the girls make him proud, and Justin and Jacob he adores- luckily, they are not afraid of him when he coughs loudly, etc- they go right up to him, give him hugs and kisses and make him smile- it makes me so happy to see him happy- imagine how his life must be- sitting at home every day, watching some tv, napping, not eating, not being able to bathe or feed yourself or walk by yourself- his skin is so thin now that he bruises when they move him from his wheelchair to the bed- he does still shave and brush his teeth himself- but, i know how much joy my boys bring to him and grandma. We were just there for thanksgiving and you can tell in the pictures how happy he was. This time, Justin played some cards with him, too!

Papa went to college in new jersey and was on the gymnastics team. He then went to grad school and got his PhD. He met my grandmother in New jersey. His parents were from Russia. Growing up, they did not have much money, and as a result, he always tells us to clean our plate at dinner- not to waste food, as he cannot imagine throwing food away when he used to almost beg for it!

He was a dairy science professer at LSU for years until he retired. He was an avid golfer, and even had a few hole in one's in his day! I am sure the day he could no longer golf was very sad for him. Growing up, grandma and papa came to visit us in houston every few months- my sister and i would watch out the front window as they arrived, honking their horn as they pulled in the driveway- and we'd wave goodbye the same way when they left. We went (and still go) to lousiana for every thanksgiving holiday- and every spring break growing up. We'd go see mike the tiger (LSU mascot), go swimming at the LSU pool, go to shows at LSU, play tennis on the LSU courts, roll down the hills at LSU and run on the track .. can you tell their life revolve(d)(s) around LSU? we'd also shop! Papa took water aerobics class at the LSU pool until he was 96 or 97, he'd go every week in his wheel chair and they'd get him in- we'd go with him when we were visiting. He also is a HUGE LSU sports fan- he and grandma used to go to all of the football games, and some baseball and basketball games, too. He still watches all of the football games, even if he doses off for a few minutes here and there!

After he retired, he joined a painting class- he painted alot of canvas paintings with oil based paint i think? he did some great work- grandma proudly displays them all over the house.

Our weekly phone calls growing up were every sunday- Papa was always asking if we were getting our calcium- (being a dairy science professer, he knows the importance of calcium for bone growth, teeth, etc).. and were we getting exercise. He gave many lectures around the country when my mom and aunt were little, they'd drive from one side of the US to the other for road trips and lectures.

I remember papa lou doing this train thing in their kitchen- he'd make a train sound with his feet and hands- and start slow and go faster and faster- i try to imitate it for the boys- and grandma sylvia- she'd sing in yiddish to us a bedtime song, which i sing to the boys on occasion but i cant remember it all- called afin pripizach? i have NO clue how to spell it.

Grandma was always telling papa 'lou! luge eh lane' (no idea how to spell that either) but it mean lou, leave them alone!!! whenever he'd quiz us too long.

Anyway- i just wanted to wish him a happy 98th birthday, even though my grandparents dont have the internet, maybe i'll print a copy of this for them to read!

Here are some pictures from our visit on thanksgiving this year:

Pumpkin Carving

We had a few people over for some pumpkin carving in our backyard... the kids had fun playing but NOT carving! they were much more interested in playing, which, once again, left dad to do the carving! and the girls and other moms did some carving, too. miss sherri also led the kids in an obstacle course on our still broken down little tikes playcube- who knew it had other uses besides climbing on it!

Justin was super excited bc his 3 best friends were there- kevin, mitchell and baron. oh, and there was a slight mishap with the halloween masks i bought on oriental trading- the color from the purple ones BLED onto the kids faces! they had pink faces! i emailed oriental trading customer service about it and they said they would notify someone and also refuned my money.

ok i know i am WAY behind- so oct 22

Justin taught himself how to ride a bike. we had tried to teach him before- but he is a perfectionist, and if he cant do something right on the first try - or second try, he often quits and moves on to something else.

Well, he had been watching the kids on nana and pawpaws culdesac ride their bikes for days- and i guess was determined after that- so he did it- he got on his bike (jeremy had taken the wheels off months ago when we were trying to teach him) and wobbled once or twice and took off! just like that! noone running behind him holding the seat, nothing!

we (and he) were so proud! here are a few pics and a video:

october 16-17 - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK!

yep, i went to the houston and san antonio shows- and they were AWESOME- we waited since our last show which was in 1993 or 1994 when they were totally not popular any more, and jon was missing... they were at a state fair in san antonio- they were definitely fading out... anyway, finally, 15 years later, THEY'RE BACK!

we night, we found the hotel and headed up there for a few cocktails and nk sightings- and i got a blurry picture of me and joe... but donnie and danny werent in town- oh well. we headed back up there thurs morning for a few more sightings.. :) and pictures with jon and jordan. yes, i was stalking and no i dont care, i waited 15 years for those pictures :)

then we headed over to the galleria for lunch, and to blake's to get ready! there were 8 of us going to the houston show (and other friends of mine went, too, but werent sitting with us) the show was awesome- yay! friday morning, we headed to san antonio- stacy flew in from maryland and went with us- we did the 5* vip meet and greet (anyone can do it- you purchase it, dont have to win it)... we finally got to meet all 5 of them- (me, steph, blake, and stacy)... unfortunately you couldnt bring a camera, so we only got a group picture of us and 6 other random people (they let you in in groups of 10)... but still cool. in the 5* vip package, that included tickets in the first 10 rows- and you didnt find out where your seats were until that day- well, blakley opened the envelope- and we got FIRST ROW!!!!!!!! we were psyched! first row was awesome! i am so ready for the summer tour! :)

here's us at the hotel

Oct 12- Justin's first Tee ball game with the Dad's club

Justin has played tee ball for two sessions at the YMCA, but it's not very productive. The practices were only 30 minutes one time a week- they didn't play on a real baseball field- and didn't get much accomplished. The first year, he didn't like it much, but last year he loved it- I think it was his age and also, his friend, Baron was on the team.

So, this year, we signed up for fall ball at the Pearland Dad's club. The Dad's Club is well known in Pearland as 'the' place to play teeball/softball/baseball. It also has a reputation for being a little too competitive.  But, since justin is still 4, we can still play instructional tee ball, which is just that- instructional.  Also, the fall season of baseball is supposedly more lax.  The Dad's (or Mom's in some cases) can stay on the field and instruct the kids where to run next, etc. Also, they don't keep score. Each player gets a chance to bat and then they switch to outfield. Each team goes up to bat 3 times total. They get to play on a 'real' ball field- and get to sit in the dugout when not at bat or in the outfield. They have batting helmets and baseball pants and cleats and baseball bags, bats, hats and their favorite- the snacks/gatorade they get (brought by parents each week) after the games and practices.  Justin is a nice big brother and always shares with Jake.

Justin is enjoying it, even though he didn't have any friends on the team when we started. He has practice one night a week for an hour, and games once a week for a max hour 45 minutes. Jacob has fun watching, and nana and pawpaw come out to watch, too. This past weekend, aunt marsha even came to watch.

Here are a few pics from the first two games (oct 12 and 19)... His team name is Lynx.  I'll post more from the later games in a few posts.

oct 11- Dewberry Farm

Nana, Brooke, Justin, jacob and i headed out to dewberry farm ... it's about an hour and 15 minute drive into the boonies- and was fun- but i think we'll skip it next year! The first year we went, most things were free. Now, they have added more activities, but all for a fee. For example, a simple face painting was $4 per kid! And, you can no longer bring your own lunch- you have to buy their overpriced food after you stand in the long, long line (or in our case, after nana stands in the line hehe). There were lines for the hay ride, lines to pay for the pumpkins, lines for everything. The kids had fun, but now i say- been there, done that. and dont plan to go again unless the kids bring it up.

Anyway- here are a few pictures from the day..

this was hilarious- he was cracking up at the chickens (below)

and here- he is being difficult- when i want to take a picture! (below)

but i did manage to get one
